Former AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan revealed this weekend that he may be interested in taking up a role with Racing Victoria. The former AFC boss is very passionate about racing and says he is keen to get more involved in the horse racing industry.
Racing Victoria is in the middle of a major shakeup after chief executive Andrew Jones resigned immediately last week. Jones’ tenure was a controversial one, so many are calling for a complete overhaul of Racing Victoria.

McLachlan’s future linked to Racing Victoria
When Andrew Jones announced his resignation from his post as Racing Victoria CEO, one name was on everyone’s lips to bring in; Gillon McLachlan.
The former AFL chief executive has been away from sports management for over six months since stepping down from his role as AFL boss in October 2023. He has been linked to many sporting business positions since then, including a role at Racing Victoria.
This speculation ramped up after Jones stepped down. He is reportedly Racing Minister Anthony Carbines’ top choice for the role. Some reports have gone as far as to say that McLachlan will be brought in to be the new Racing Victoria chairman and be given permission to handpick the next Racing Victoria CEO.
Despite the many rumours, McLachlan has largely remained silent about his future. Until this weekend at least.
McLachlan reveals passion for horse racing and insight into next job
On Saturday, McLachlan was spotted at Morphettville watching the South Australian Derby and his horse A Samurai Mind. He spoke with Channel Seven about his passion for horse racing and about his potential future with Racing Victoria.
“I’m very passionate about racing,” he said to Channel Seven’s Bruce McAvaney during the South Australian Derby broadcast.
“I need to figure out the financial logistics concerning my home and family first, but if all aligns, I would be eager to contribute to Racing Victoria as chairman if the opportunity arises and they see fit.
“There’s still a lot to consider and several steps to be taken, but I am ready to help the racing community if there’s a way I can be of service,” McLachlan said.
McLachlan’s Racing Victoria chances
If McLachlan’s comments are anything to go by, he is far from a lock to take over as Racing Victoria boss, but it does seem very likely right now.
In his Channel Seven interview, the former AFL boss revealed that he is enjoying his break from working, while also admitting that he is “back talking to people now.”
It is unclear what other options might be available to McLachlan. Even if there are others on the table now, it is hard to see him passing up the chance to be the Racing Victoria boss.
As he explained, his passion for racing makes him a good fit. The role would also allow McLachlan to take on his old foe Peter V'Landys, who is currently serving as Racing NSW CEO.

I am an avid horse racing enthusiast and punter. Growing up in Randwick, I have been surrounded by racing through stories from the elderly’s past endeavours to the racecourse and owners that are friends of the family. I am also a data-scientist and am fascinated and intrigued by the algorithmic approach to form. I’ve has become more involved with racing over the past few years due to simultaneously delving deeper into the sport and learning how to apply a data driven approach to punting. Beyond Racing, I am an avid NRL fan and MMA fan, the latter of which I have largely applied the same philosophy of methodical, data driven punting towards and found solid success in the MMA space and I continue to track and improve my strategies.
