The annual Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill ended tragically this year after one of Australia’s top jockeys Kerrin McEvoy suffered a nasty fall from his horse Tintookie during the final race on Sunday. The fall looked rather serious, but reports say McEvoy stayed conscious and is in stable condition now after the race.
Earlier in the day, McEvoy had won the Group 1 The Galaxy race, riding the five-year-old mare Zapateo.

McEvoy suffers dangerous fall
Kerrin McEvoy and his horse Tintookie, a four-year-old chestnut mare, trained by Brad Widdup, were unable to finish the Birthday Card Stakes on Saturday.
Heading into the final stretch of the final race of Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill, Tintookie broke down, slamming into the track on the final turn. McEvoy was ejected from the horse and in need of immediate medical attention.
McEvoy, who remained conscious throughout the ordeal, was treated immediately by paramedics and taken to the Westmead Hospital for x-rays and further treatment.
Top Racing NSW steward Steve Railton addressed the press after the race to give an update on Mcevoy’s condition.
“He’s got a full range of movement, but he’s got discomfort in the lower back and hip,” the Racing NSW spokesman said. “He has been taken to Westmead for assessment.”
Mixed day for McEvoy
Just 35 minutes before taking his nasty spill with Tinookie, McEvoy had won the Group 1 The Galaxy race with five-year-old mare Zapateo ($26).
Zapateo and McEvoy edged out the horse race betting sites favourite Sunshine In Paris ($5.50) by a whole head. The mare also held off fellow outsider Asfoora ($18) to come away with first place.
The win was a bright spot in a bad day for McEvoy. The well-respected jockey revealed after the win that his sun had broken his wrist playing football earlier in the day.
“I want to give a shout-out to my boy Charlie," McEvoy said. “He broke his wrist playing football this morning, so he's missed out on a Group 1 with Nash [as a valet] and a Group 1 with me. He'll be flat as a tack but hopefully he's back on the mend.”
Tinookie unable to be saved
Ralton, the Racing NSW steward, Tintookie’s injuries were too severe, and she could not be saved. The five-time race winner with over $500,000 of prize money to her name was put down on Saturday. putting a dark cloud over the Golden Slipper Day festivities after the final race.
Chain Of Lightning ($16) won the Birthday Card Stakes after Mcevoy and Tintookie’s fall.
