Storm Away primed for big Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic at Pinjarra

Jockey Holly Watson and the Mitchell Pateman team are hoping to see a good run from their rising gelding Stay Away in the Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic at Pinjarra Racecourse on Saturday.

The son of Lucky Vega put in a strong showing last weekend in the Perth Plate at Ascot, where he finished second to Daniel Morton’s Monte Tremezzo in a very competitive race.

Highlights

  • Stay Away finished second in his debut race on Saturday, February 8 at Ascot.
  • Holly Watson will ride Stay Away in the Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic.
  • Stay Away is one of the top four Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic betting favourites.

Gelding impresses in debut start

While, Stay Away lost the Perth Plate by less than a nose to Monte Tremezzo, he actually entered the race as the clear favourite.

Most betting sites gave the Pateman-trained gelding $1.2 chances of winning his debut race. Despite not living up to the odds, his jockey was impressed with the run.

“It was a huge run,” Watson said this week previewing the Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic.

“Obviously he stepped a bit slow and got quite fierce on me. The race was run awkwardly as well and he did a bit of work to pull me to the front.

“I thought it was a huge run and he got a little bit lost out in front.”

Stay Away primed for improvement

After discussing last week’s race, Watson turned her sights on the Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic and Stay Away’s chances.

“I think there will be huge improvement,” Watson said.

“He’s such a cruisy horse and has done really well.”

Stay Away has been drawn into barrier four, which has increased his odds of winning this Saturday’s $250,000 race.

Other likely winners

The betting apps are less optimistic about Stay Away’s chances than Watson are. He has just $8 odds to win with just days left before the big race.

Neville Parnham’s Strideaway is the current favourite with $3.10 chances. Watson agreed with the horse racing betting odds and commented on the challenge of racing against a horse like Strideaway.

“He’s (Strideaway) drawn a barrier and we can sit him behind something,” Watson said.

“We can get him to settle straight away. I think he’s a huge chance in the race,” she added.

David Harrison’s Da Generals Son and Sean & Jake Casey’s Do I Feel Lucky are closely behind Strideaway as second and third favourites with $5.50 and $6 odds to win, respectively.
