About the Provincial-Midway Championships Final
Originally known as the Provincial Championships Final, the Provincial-Midway Championships Final was expanded in 2022. The race takes a similar format to that of the Country Championships Final which takes place during Day One of The Championships.
The concept for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final originally centred around a series of different separate qualifying races at each Provincial Club, including; Kembla Grange, Newcastle, Wyong, Gosford and Hawkesbury. The top three in each of those qualifying races booked themselves a spot in the final race during Day Two of The Championships at Randwick Racecourse.
Things were expanded in 2022 though and there are now seven qualifying races (each with a prize money of $150,000) which are as follows:
- Three races exclusively for Provincial-trained runners (the top two in each race book their spot in the final).
- Three races for Provincial-trained and Midway-eligible runners (the top two in each race book their spot in the final).
- One Wild Card race for runners that completed in one of the previously mentioned qualifying races (the top three in this race book their spot in the final).
The Provincial-Midway Championships Final is held under set weights conditions and was first launched in 2015 to shed more light on regional runners. Each year the race garners more and more interest, even though the race isn’t technically a Group 1.
The race takes place during Day Two of The Championships at Randwick Racecourse, which is on the same day as races like the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the Queen of the Turf Stakes, the Australian Oaks and the Sydney Cup. With so many Group One races on this day, it truly is the best place for Provincial/ Midway horses to show countless horse racing fans what they’ve got.
So much action is to be had at Randwick Racecourse throughout The Championships, so it’s no surprise that it is one of the top tracks in the country. If you want to see something a little bit different, like runners, trainers and jockeys you’ve never seen before, it is certainly worth checking out the Provincial-Midway Championships Final.
Here at OnlyRacing, we will have all the information you could ever need about this unique race which is a recent addition to the Australian racing calendar. We’ve got tips, field, results, betting, odds and so much more information about the Provincial-Midway Championships Final. You’ll be an expert in no time!
One of the reasons the interest in the Provincial-Midway Championships Final is so high is due to the prize money on offer. There’s a total of $1 million up for grabs, which is likely a lot more than most of the runners in the race each year have even seen.
Check out the breakdown of the $1 million in prize money right here:
Place: | Prize Money: |

While our 2026 tips aren’t available just yet, you can use the benefit of hindsight to see how our tipsters performed in 2025:
Provincial-Midway Championships Final Best Bet - Matcha Latte
Once again, it’s a fairly open field for the 2025 Provincial-Midway Championships Final, with the market maining focusing on two runners in particular; Matcha Latte and Lord Of Biscay. I’m going to side with Matcha Latte for this one though and he is currently the narrow $3.80 favourite with PlayUp.
The 5YO qualified for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final with a barrier-to-post win. In his first attempt to qualify, he was pipped on the line, finishing third by 0.2L. He comes into this one with more fitness, so he should give this one a real shake. The set weights conditions help him as well and he draws barrier two.
Provincial-Midway Championships Final Next Best - Lord Of Biscay
Siding with Lord Of Biscay for the 2025 Provincial-Midway Championships Final, who is currently on the second line of betting with PlayUp, at odds of $3.90. The gelding qualified for this one by finishing second last time out, behind Welcometobarbados (by just 0.1L), but in front of Matcha Latte.
The gelding has had a tick-over trial since that race and looks to be in decent form coming into this race. He’s got a bit of barrier speed as well, so barrier four suits and he’ll look to get in a good position in the early stages, under the guidance of James McDonald. Doesn’t have the best Soft record (5:1-0-0), but there is room for improvement here.
Provincial-Midway Championships Final Best Roughie - Well Timed
In a relatively open affair, there’s always value lying around and I think I’ve found it with Well Timed. The 4YO is currently going around with odds of $19, thanks to PlayUp. He has a decent career record of 14:4-3-2 and this race does look to be a bit tough, I can certainly see him running in the top three.
He finished second in his qualifying race 0.5L behind Mahogany Girl at Hawkesbury in early March. Since then, he had a flat performance at Rosehill, finishing last, but he’ll be fitter coming into this one third-up. This looks to have been the goal of trainer Kerry Parker for Well Timed and they book the services of Nash Rawiller as well.

In 2025, we saw a field of 15 runners confirmed for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final. On top of this, there were three emergencies confirmed as well and we ended up seeing one pre-race scratching of Welcometobarbados. This meant that Kind Words competed in the race while the other two emergencies didn’t.
If you’re new to the world of horse racing, you’ll quickly learn that scratchings are a fairly common occurrence. They can happen at any time and for several different reasons. If you’ve placed a bet on the Provincial-Midway Championships Final, you should keep a close eye on things.
Something else you should look into is the barrier draw. The barrier each runner jumps from can sometimes have a significant impact on the end results. Some runners also have a racing style which means they prefer an inside or outside barrier. Some barriers have also seen more success than others in the past as well.
Provincial-Midway Championships Final Form Guide
With a race like the Provincial-Midway Championships Final, which has only been around since 2015, it can be difficult to find patterns when it comes to the past winners. We always look into the Provincial-Midway Championships Final form guide as the data and stats are vital to helping us nail down a potential winner.
We know you are busy and may not necessarily have time to go through the form guide, so we’ve done all the heavy lifting. The team at OnlyRacing have gone from the Provincial-Midway Championships Final form guide and have found some key form indicators that you need to know about before placing any bets. Let’s check out what we found here!
In the limited amount of data that we do have, we’ve found that favourites have had a fairly successful strike race, winning on four occasions since 2015. You should also look into runners who have had success (or at least raced) at a higher Class level.
Runners who can win a Saturday metropolitan race should also be considered, especially if there is some tough competition in that particular race. Also look for runners that have success at the 1,400m distance, with experience at Randwick Racecourse as well.
As you may already know, it can be a wet and wild ride in Sydney during Autumn, so look for runners who have experience on Heavy or Soft tracks. After the Provincial-Midway Championships Final, some successful runners could make their way up north to Queensland for their Winter Racing carnival, so keep an eye out there!
Provincial-Midway Championships Final Horses
Over the years, we’ve seen some very unique horses competing in the Provincial-Midway Championships Final. While these horses may not have gone on to win Group 1 races, the whole point of the Provincial-Midway Championships Final is to shine a light on horses that the public doesn’t generally get to see.
Provincial-Midway Championships Final has been running since 2015 and since then there have been some top-notch horses that have won the race. We’ve picked out a handful of Provincial-Midway Championships Final horses to feature in this section, which you can check out here:
Danish Twist - 2016
Throughout her career, Danish Twist won almost $1 million in prize money, thanks mainly to winning the Provincial-Midway Championships Final in 2016! After her victory in the Provincial-Midway Championships Final, she went on to place in a Group 1 race, the Coolmore Classic.
Bobbing - 2019
Bobbing won the Provincial-Midway Championships Final in 2019 and in his later years also contested races like The Kosciuszko and the Country Championships Final. He finished his career with a record of 22:5-5-1 and was unplaced in his one attempt at Group 2 level.
Through The Cracks - 2020
Through The Cracks is another quality horse that won the Provincial-Midway Championships Final and he has a current career record of 24:7-3-5. So far, Through The Cracks has amassed a total of $627,075 in prize money and has finished third in a Group 3 previously.
Spangler - 2023
Like Through The Cracks, Spangler has also placed at Group 3 level. The gelding has almost $1 million in prize money so far throughout his career and at this stage, he has a pretty awesome career record of 17:5-3-2.
Provincial-Midway Championships Final Odds
Looking for Provincial-Midway Championships Final odds? Well, this is the right section for you! PlayUp hasn’t released all its markets for the race, including their fixed win odds, but we will keep an eye on things for you and provide this information closer to race day.
All the best horse racing betting apps will release markets for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final before the event, so you can bet on whatever market you desire. As soon as the odds are released, you’ll notice they are constantly jumping around. Several factors influence a change in the odds, so you should keep an eye on things.
When it comes to horse racing markets, if you are going to get your bets on early, look for when the market is “Before Noms” because this means you’ll get your stake back if the runner isn’t included in the final field. If you are betting when the market is listed as “All-In”, you won’t have any such luck.
Betting as early as possible is also recommended because you are more likely to get a better price for the eventual favourite. So, if you’ve got an early hot tip, it could certainly pay to splash a little bit of cash and you never know, you could be swimming in it come Provincial-Midway Championships Final day!

Provincial-Midway Championships Final History
It’s certainly a short history, but history nonetheless! The inaugural running of the Provincial-Midway Championships Final took place in 2015 and was won by Sure And Fast. While not technically a Group 1, the Provincial-Midway Championships Final features some of the best Provincial/ Midway runners going around.
The race takes place during Day Two of The Championships, which is jam-packed with quality Group 1 races. Throughout the Autumn Racing Carnival there is quality Group 1 action to be had every weekend, which makes it one of the biggest horse racing carnivals of the year.
The Provincial-Midway Championships Final has seen a lot of success over the years and shines a light on some horses that the public may not have seen before. The trainer with the best record in the Provincial-Midway Championships Final has to be Kris Lees, who has won on five occasions!
Jockeys Jason Collett and James McDonald have both won the Provincial-Midway Championships Final twice (so far). Each year there are a handful of qualifying races for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final, so we have an idea of which runners will be in the final field after each race.
The Racing NSW initiative to support and promote racing in regional areas has certainly been a success and we will likely see the Provincial-Midway Championships Final grow even bigger in years to come. It is a great opportunity for relatively unknown horses to get a taste of metropolitan action (and the epic prize money that comes with it)!
The Provincial-Midway Championships Final is just one race on what is a jam-packed racing calendar. We have more pages like this one that go through all the other key races on the calendar. So, if you want to learn more, all you need to do is head on over to our Group One races list!
