All-Star Mile Preview and Tips 08/03/25

What a weekend of racing we are treated to! We have one of the biggest Group One races in the Autumn Racing Carnival, the All-Star Mile. Along with the All-Star Mile, we also have the Newmarket Handicap, both run at Flemington Racecourse. Not to be outdone, there’s also racing in Sydney, with the Randwick Guineas and the Canterbury Stakes.

For the All-Star Mile, we see just a seven-runner field, but there are some big names! The likes of Mr Brightside, Another Wil, Tom Kitten and more are listed to line up in the All-Star Mile on Saturday. The current narrow pre-race favourite is Mr Brightside, with Another Will not that far behind him.

It’s going to be a massive day of racing, so let’s get cracking with my Saturday tips for the big race. I’ve done all you loyal OnlyRacing fans a favour by going through the field and putting forward my best bets for the 2025 All-Star Mile, so there is certainly something for everyone here.

Race Tempo and Likely Leaders

Unlike picking the winner of the race, it’s pretty clear who is going to lead this one. Rise At Dawn has the barrier speed and jumps from barrier two, so expect him to be leading pretty much from the get-go. The current pre-race favourite, Mr Brightside draws to settle in with his typical stalking position.

Another Wil, who is on the second line of betting, will sit near the leader, with cover, waiting for the perfect time to strike. It’s a very small field, so everyone should get their chance if they are good enough. Tom Kitten, the only other runner in single-digit odds, will likely settle in near the rear of the field.

All-Star Mile Best Bet - Mr Brightside

In the 2024 All-Star Mile we got the Mr Brightside vs Pride Of Jenni battle. Now in 2025, we get the Mr Brightside vs Another Wil battle! I think it’ll be Mr Brightside that will win this round. Mr Brightside is currently going around as the favourite with PlayUp, but there’s not a lot in it, $2.45 for Mr Brightside compared to $2.70 for Another Wil.

Mr Brightside comes into the All-Star Mile third-up and we all know that he tends to improve the longer he gets into his runs. Last time out, Mr Brightside proved too good in the Futurity Stakes, but if there was another couple of metres, I think Tom Kitten would have had his number. Craig William sticks and he knows this horse very well. Should win here.

Mr Brightside to win @ $2.45.

All-Star Mile Safe Bet - Tom Kitten

As I just mentioned, Tom Kitten was very close to getting the win against Mr Brightside last time out in the Futurity Stakes. I think if anyone can get the job done against the favourite, Tom Kitten is the most likely. We are also picking up some decent enough value with the gelding as well, who is currently going around with odds of $5.00 for the win with Bet365.

I’ve put Mr Brightside on top over Tom Kitten because Mr B has two runs under his belt compared to Tom Kitten’s one. You can’t totally discount Tom Kitten for the win though, as he is a previous second-up winner. Jockey Ben Melham retains the ride. Watch for Tom Kitten and Melham flying late.

All-Star Mile Value Bet - Atishu

It’s a small field, but I think there is value to be had with Atishu. The only female in the race, she’ll carry 2kg less than the rest of the field. The mare had an excellent Spring Racing Carnival with multiple Group One placings and a win in the Empire Rose Stakes as well. Atishu is currently going around with odds of $11, thanks to Dabble.

She’s got a decent record at Flemington as well which includes four wins and three placings across 10 starts. The 7YO tackles the All-Star Mile second-up after a disappointing Apollo Stakes. However, if we look back to last Autumn, she was a winner second-up. I think she’ll improve in this one. I’m not sure if a win is in the cards, but definitely for the exotics.

All-Star Mile The Danger - Another Wil

Another Wil has been somewhat of a market mover at QuestBet with the gelding opening with odds of $3.20 and he’s now going around at $2.85. We haven’t seen Another Wil since the CF Orr Stakes where Jamie Melham put in an absolute peach of a ride to win by 0.2L against none other than Mr Brightside.

Jamie Melham and Another Wil are paired up again as they have for the last three races plus a recent trial last week. That trial was pretty good as well and Another Wil has a good record at Flemington. A lot is working in his favour and he does have the recent experience of beating Mr Brighside. Another live hope in the 2025 All-Star Mile.

All-Star Mile Best Roughie - Rise At Dawn

Rise At Dawn will likely take the lead in this one and I think he’ll run a good race. I’m not sure he’ll win this, but definitely one to include in your wider plays for the day and one to watch for the future. Rise At Dawn is currently listed with odds of $15 to take the win in the All-Star Mile on Saturday, thanks to Bet Right.

The 4YO is yet to compete at Group One level but does come into this one with some form under his belt, winning his last four races. Yes, this is another level and a half, but he also does enjoy the Flemington track and he won first-up here in mid-February and it seemed like he could have gone up another level if needed.
