Australian Guineas Preview and Tips 01/03/25

The Autumn Racing Carnival continues and we see the first three Group One races in March (which is the official start to Autumn in Australia). Flemington Racecourse plays host to the Australian Guineas, while we see two Group One races in Sydney at Randwick Racecourse with the Surround Stakes and the Verry Elleegant Stakes.

We see a capacity field for the 2025 Australia Guineas with 16 runners confirmed as well as two emergencies in case there are any pre-race scratchings. The market currently has Angel Capital on top with Point And Shoot and Sepals the only other runners currently listed with single-digit odds, according to PlayUp.

I hope you are ready because my Saturday tips have landed at OnlyRacing and I’m keen for what is going to be an epic day of racing split across multiple states. For the Australian Guineas, I have selected five best bets in total, from my top bet to my best roughie, so there is something for everyone.

Race Tempo and Likely Leaders

There are a few runners in this one with some barrier speed, so I’m expecting a moderate pace in this year’s Australian Guineas. The likes of Savaglee, Stay Focused, Feroce and Opening Address will look to hold positions at the front of the field.

The current favourite, Angel Capital, doesn’t have the barrier speed so will likely look to settle around mid-field or further back. Point And Shoot, another one of the more favoured runners in the market, will get the gun run from barrier one and will also probably settle around mid-field.

Australian Guineas Best Bet - Angel Capital

The 2025 Australian Guineas presents somewhat of a challenge for tipsters. There are three runners listed for around the same price at the time of writing with PlayUp. However, in the end, I’ve sided with Angel Capital, who is the current favourite with PlayUp, at odds of $3.80 to win.

Looking back across the past 38 editions of the Australian Guineas, we have seen 24 winners jump with odds of $5.50 or less and the favourite has won 14 times across the same span. It’s easy to see why Angel Capital is the favourite, he put together a great performance last time out, winning the Autumn Stakes and Ben Melham is on board again here as well.

Australian Guineas Safe Bet - Sepals

Sepals is a pretty safe bet in my eyes and it wouldn’t shock me at all to see him win this one. The gelding last competed in the CS Hayes Stakes and punched in a very convincing win. He won by 3.3L in that race but it could have been more, Blake Shinn knew the victory was already in the bag and eased up.

It’s shaping up to be a similar sort of race here and Sepals jumps from barrier three with Shinn sticking as well. Bet365 is currently offering $6.00 to claim the win here and I think Sepals is a genuine winning chance. Eight horses have completed the CS Hayes Stakes - Australian Guineas double and Sepals could very well be the ninth.

Australian Guineas Value Bet - Goldrush Guru

Goldrush Guru comes into the Australian Guineas third up, with a couple of runs under his belt, so he should be at peak fitness for this one. Before this prep, Goldrush Guru was victorious in the Victoria Derby, winning by 1.5L, but so far this prep, he hasn’t been able to crack the top three.

There are a few in this one that are coming through the CS Hayes Stakes and Goldrush Guru is one of them, finishing fourth, 4.9L off the leader. He was ridden with more intent in that one and it was an improvement from his first-up run. Another smidge of improvement could see him run in the top three here and he is paying $12 for the win at Dabble.

Australian Guineas The Danger - Feroce

Despite going around with odds of $13.50 at the time of writing with QuestBet, I think Feroce is in with a great chance in the Australian Guineas and is certainly one to watch. He will need luck from the barrier draw though as in the last 31 years, only three runners have won when starting from a barrier wider than nine (Feroce jumps from barrier 11).

Feroce is yet another runner who is progressing from the CS Hayes Stakes and he finished third in that one behind Sepals (my safe bet) and Ndola (who is currently going around with odds of $17.50). The 3YO will enjoy a firmer track, which he should get on Saturday. There’s a lot to like with this one.

Australian Guineas Best Roughie - Savour The Dream

Savour The Dream is worth a shot I think, especially for those looking to play the wider exotics or hope he can scrap in a top-three finish at decent place odds. There is absolutely no love for Savour The Dream in the market and when he is going from an open handicap to a Group One it’s understandable that he has been a little forgotten.

At the time of writing, Savour The Dream is going around with odds of $31 at Bet Right to take the win. The Queenslander has been consistent throughout his career and he is looking for the trifecta of wins here after winning two at the same trip. This will be the most difficult task of his career to date, but the big boy should enjoy the wide open spaces of Flemington.
