Australian Oaks Preview and Tips 12/04/25

The Autumn Racing Carnival at Randwick Racecourse is almost drawing to a close, but we still have a couple of great weekends worth of racing, including Day Two of The Championships. Day Two includes four Group One races like the Australian Oaks, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the Sydney Cup and the Queen of the Turf Stakes

We also see the Provincial-Midway Championships Final run on the same day and while it isn’t a Group One, it is still worth a cool $1 million. For the Australian Oaks specifically, we see a field of 10 runners confirmed and the market only has eyes for one runner. Treasurethe Moment is currently the heavy favourite, with odds of $1.75.

There’s never been a better time because all my Saturday tips have arrived at OnlyRacing. I have a set of tips available for each of the five races previously mentioned and I include five best bets, so there is something for everyone. You don’t want to miss this epic Saturday of racing, so make sure you check out my tips beforehand.

Race Tempo and Likely Leaders

I don’t see a lot of speed in this one, probably more of a moderate tempo and it looks like the runners with the most barrier speed have claimed an inside barrier. With just 10 runners in this one, every runner should be able to get their fair chance of winning the race, if they are good enough.

The likes of Leica Lucy, Treasurethe Moment and Sun ‘N’ Sand all have good barrier speed and they jump from barriers one, two and three, respectively. Treasurethe Moment, who is the current pre-race favourite, might try to lead this one the whole way and we’ve almost always seen her claim a front-running position in her previous races.

Australian Oaks Best Bet - Treasurethe Moment

No doubt, Treasurethe Moment is the best runner in the race and the market has it spot on. She’s getting a little skinny for me and PlayUp is currently offering $1.75 for the filly to take the win in the Australian Oaks on Saturday. The 3YO draws barrier two and she’ll probably look to take the lead in this one. She’ll have some competition from Leica Lucy though.

The filly has had a very successful career so far, never finishing outside the top two in her 10 career starts. She’s got a good record at this track and we haven’t seen her lose a race since September last year. Something would have to go pretty wrong for her not to claim another Group One victory here.

Australian Oaks Safe Bet - Leica Lucy

Leica Lucy is currently on the second line of betting with Bet365 and you can get on her with odds of $4.20. The New Zealand raider is rated just as highly as Treasurethe Moment and she makes her first appearance in Australia on Saturday. She has got a lot of admirers both in New Zealand and in Australia.

The filly comes into this one on a five-race winning streak and last time out, she won the New Zealand Oaks (Group One) by 0.4L. I really do like the look of her, but the fact she is making her way to Australia at the end of a long prep, worries me a little and that’s why I have to go with Treasurethe Moment as my best bet.

Australian Oaks Value Bet - Verona Rose

The Gary Portelli-trained filly presents a bit of value in my eyes and she’s currently going around with double-digit odds at $11 with Dabble at the time of writing. She’s been going gang-busters to kick off her career, winning her first three career starts, but she was no match for Treasurethe in the Vinery Stud Stakes last time out, finishing fourth.

One of the things that excites me the most about Verona Rose is her pedigree. She is the daughter of Castelvecchio and out of a Mafki mare. Kerrin McEvoy, who has been onboard for most of her runs, retains the ride and he’ll have his work cut out from the widest barrier of them all. In saying that though, it’s a small field, so she should get her chance.

Australian Oaks The Danger - Belle Detelle

She’s on the one-week turnaround here, but Belle Detelle comes into the Australian Oaks in fine form after winning the Adrian Knox Stakes. She’s very lightly raced and currently has a career record of 5: 2-2-1, meaning she’s never finished outside the top three. Yes, this will be her biggest challenge to date, but I think she can give this one a red-hot crack.

At the moment, Belle Detelle is on the third line of betting, going around with odds of $8.75, thanks to QuestBet. The filly is by the same sire as Verry Elleegant, who won this race as a filly as well. The step up to 2,400m doesn’t seem to be an issue either. She’s worth a go in my opinion and certainly one to watch in the future.

Australian Oaks Best Roughie - Miss Alexis

Miss Alexis is also on the one-week turnaround after finishing fifth in the Adrian Knox Stakes. It was a great run in the end last time out, after losing ground, she ended up pushing on strongly and finishing 4.1L off the pace. She’s another that you have to respect in terms of her breeding. The filly is the daughter of Dundeel out of the mare, Jameka.

So, she’s bread for the 2,400m that she’ll tackle on Saturday and while this will be her biggest test to date, I wouldn’t be surprised to see her nab a top-three finish. Miss Alexis is going around with odds of $34 to take the win, thanks to Bet Right. Ethan Brown jumps back in the saddle and the pair already have a winning relationship.
