Provincial-Midway Championships Final Preview and Tips 12/04/25

We head to Day Two of The Championships and while there are four Group One races, we can’t forget about the Provincial-Midway Championships Final which is worth $1 million. The Group One races that are also run on the same day at Randwick include; the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the Sydney Cup, the Queen of the Turf Stakes and the Australian Oaks.

The Provincial-Midway Championships Final field features 15 runners, plus three emergencies, just in case there are any pre-race scratchings. We have seen one runner scratched and one emergency scratched so far. Matcha Latte and Lord Of Biscay are currently fighting it out for favouritism in the market.

My Saturday tips have arrived here at OnlyRacing for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final. I also have a set of tips for each of the Group One races on Saturday as well, so make sure you check them out before the races kick off. For the Provincial-Midway Championships Final, I have put together five best bets, so there should be something for everyone.

Race Tempo and Likely Leaders

There are a few runners that have some barrier speed in the Provincial-Midway Championships Final, so I’m expecting a moderate pace. Mogul Monarch, who jumps from barrier 12 might look to cut across and take the leader position. While the likes of Vintage Choice, Well Timed and Lord Of Biscay won’t be too far behind.

Matcha Latte is the current narrow favourite with PlayUp and he jumps from barrier two. He will probably settle in just behind the leaders, getting some cover in the 1,400m race. No runner really stands out in terms of closing speed and Matcha Latte will probably have to wait and hope for the right gap to open up in the closing stages.

Provincial-Midway Championships Final Best Bet - Matcha Latte

Matcha Latte is the narrowest of favourites, according to PlayUp, with odds of $3.80 to claim the win and I think the market has it right. The gelding has just pipped Lord Of Biscay for favouritism and he qualified for this one on March 20 when leading all the way and ended up finishing 1.3L ahead of the rest of the field.

He tried to qualify back on March 1 but was just edged out by Welcometobarbados and Lord Of Biscay, finishing in third place by 0.2L. Tackles the Provincial-Midway Championships Final third-up and should be all the fitter for the two runs under his belt. He is yet to win or place on Soft-rated tracks in two attempts, but he looks likely to break through on Saturday.

Provincial-Midway Championships Final Safe Bet - Lord Of Biscay

I think Lord Of Biscay is good enough to give this one a real shake and Bet365 currently has the 5YO on the second line of betting, with odds of $4.00. He has been building through his prep nicely and managed to qualify for this one last time out, on March 1. In this qualifier, he finished second by 0.1L to Welcometobarbados.

The gelding has been back to the trials since then and looks pretty good, so I’m expecting big things from him here. With his barrier speed, he’ll look to settle near the front of the field and barrier four doesn’t hurt his chances. James McDonald takes over in the saddle from Andrew Gibbons as well.

Provincial-Midway Championships Final Value Bet - Well Timed

I think Well Timed presents some decent enough value and he is currently going around with odds of $19, thanks to Dabble. He qualified for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final on March 8 with a second place behind Mahogany Girl, 0.5L off the pace. The gelding has a 64% place strike rate, courtesy of a 14:4-3-2 career record.

There’s a bit of quality in this race, so it will be challenging for the 4YO, but I think he is up to the task. It’s looking like a Soft-rated track on Saturday and he currently has a Soft record of 4:0-2-0. He was flat last time out in Rosehill, but he should be fitter for that run under his belt and he gets Nash Rawiller in the saddle as well.

Provincial-Midway Championships Final The Danger - Rapt

Finally got a mare for my 2025 Provincial-Midway Championships Final tips! The Jason Deamer-trained Rapt qualified for this race back on February 20, beating home the second-placed Bojangles by 1L. At the time of writing, you can pick up Rapt with odds of $12 to win, thanks to QuestBet.

She got a little back in that qualifying race but was flying late to claim the win. More of the same here in this one will bode very well for her chances. Since that win, she has had a tick-over trial where she was strong. The mare has a Soft-rated record of 4:0-1-1 and I think she’ll enjoy the 1,400m.

Provincial-Midway Championships Final Best Roughie - Vintage Choice

Vintage Choice is going around with some of the biggest odds for the Provincial-Midway Championships Final at the moment, so the gelding slots in as my best roughie. He’s had some decent form leading into this one and while he should certainly be listed with double-digit odds, the $51 we are getting at the moment with Bet Right seems too high.

The 6YO comes into this race with back-to-back second places and his run last time out was full of effort when he finished just 0.8L behind Imposant to qualify for this race. Vintage Choice worked to take the lead last time out and ended up being the only on-speed runner to finish well. Worth a small play at massive odds.
