Randwick Guineas Preview and Tips 08/03/25

As we have come to expect, the Autumn Racing Carnival is ramping up and we have four Group One races to get ready for. The Randwick Guineas takes place this Saturday at Randwick Racecourse, along with the Canterbury Stakes. In Melbourne, we have the All-Star Mile and the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington. 

We see a small field line up for the 2025 Randwick Guineas, with just nine runners confirmed. Broadsiding is the heavy favourite at the moment, with odds of $1.60 at PlayUp. Swiftfalcon, Aeliana and Linebacker are the three other runners that are currently listed with single-digit odds.

It’s a jam-packed Saturday with heaps to get through, so make sure you check out my Saturday tips here at OnlyRacing before it gets too hectic. My best bets have landed for the 2025 Randwick Guineas, so keep reading to see which runners I think have a good chance of putting in a great performance.

I don't really see a lot of speed in this year’s edition of the Randwick Guineas. There are a couple with barrier speed, but they aren’t the type to look to lead. I think Linebacker will probably end up becoming the leader in this one, jumping from barrier six, so jockey Zac Lloyd will have to cut across.

The heavy favourite, Broadsiding, will probably settle in the middle of the field, with some cover and look for a gap in the closing stages. It is a small field, so there should be room for every runner to get their chance if they are good enough. All eyes will probably be on Broadsiding though and how he progresses through the race.

Yes, there isn’t a lot of value to be found in Broadsiding, with the colt currently going around with odds of $1.60 at PlayUp, but I do think he is the clear runner to beat in the Randwick Guineas. The 3YO gets James McDonald in the saddle and last time out he put in a great performance, winning the Hobartville Stakes.

The Hobartville Stakes is the lead-up race for the Randwick Guineas, with 19 of the last 26 Randwick Guineas winners coming from the Hobartville Stakes. On top of this, in the last 12 editions of the Randwick Guineas, seven winners have won their lead-up race. A lot of the key form stats are pointing to Broadsiding.

Like many in this field, Swiftfalcon is coming through the Hobartville Stakes, which was run two weeks ago. In that one, the 3YO finished in second place, 1L off Broadsiding. The Bet365 market has Swiftfalcon as the runner most likely to get the win over Broadsiding as the gelding is on the second line of betting, with odds of $4.40.

He did have to do a lot of work in the Hobartville Stakes, so if he can settle closer to the front of the pack, he’ll have a better chance and has a chance of turning the tables on the red-hot favourite. I reckon he has among the fastest closing speed of the field and he’ll need to use all of it to keep Broadsiding behind him.

Our Benefactor could have slotted in as my best roughie for the Randwick Guineas, but there’s another that I have my eye on for that spot and I do think there is some value with the Queenslander. The 3YO is currently going around with odds of $34 to take the win, thanks to Dabble.

He put in a strong performance last start at Eagle Farm, which was over the 1,400m and he defeated the likes of Rock The Sunrise. The step up in trip looks ideal and while this is obviously a more difficult task, he is a winner of three from five and has put in consistently good performances. He might be able to use the slow tempo to his liking.

Linebacker is an interesting horse and while Broadsiding deserves to be the heavy favourite, I’m surprised with the price we’re getting for the gelding. Linebacker has odds of $10 to win the 2025 Randwick Guineas, thanks to QuestBet. Another coming through the Hobartville Stakes, Linebacker finished sixth.

The money for Linebacker came in hot late in the Hobartville Stakes, with the 3YO jumping as the second favourite, but went on to disappoint. I think he’ll be all the better for the two runs under his belt and a great booking of the in-form Zac Lloyd only helps his chances. One for the each-way bettors out there.

Depth Of Character is certainly one for the wider exotics if that’s how you play. I think he shows a lot of potential and could turn a head or two on Saturday. He is worth a try I reckon and I’ll be popping on a small place bet on him. This will be his first attempt at Group One level, so I’ll be interested to see how he goes.

Depth Of Character certainly has longshot odds and at Bet Right, you can pick him up for $41. There has been a bit of a gap between his first and second runs this prep, being scratched a couple of times, so something might not be quite right. I think he’ll progress though, tackling this third-up, so he is worth a try.
