Rockhampton Racecourse, which is also known as Callaghan Park is located in Central Queensland, 640km northwest of Brisbane. The track itself sits at a picturesque location, just on the banks of the Fitzroy River.

Interestingly, there is an inner and outer track layout at Rockhampton, with the outer track consisting of grass and the secondary inner track consisting of sand. There is a massive 580m long straight that gives each runner their fair chance of securing a win if they are good enough.

Rockhampton Racecourse History

As one of the biggest racing centres in Queensland, Rockhampton Racecourse has a long and rich history. It is the home of the Rockhampton Jockey Club, which was established on the current site in 1898. This was about 36 years after racing officially began in the region.

Rockhampton Racecourse is also known as Callaghan Park, which was named after Dr William Callaghan in 1912. Callaghan was the first president of the Rockhampton Jockey Club and was involved with the club for almost 50 years.

In 1952, the construction of the new photo finish tower began and it was first used in January 1953. Mobile barrier stalls were first used in 1960 and in 1986, Sky Channel broadcasted racing at Rockhampton Racecourse live.

1,000m	At the shortest distance, runners begin in a chute off the course proper and feed directly into the first wide turn in the inner course. Runners have a short straight before another wide turn. Insider barriers do have some power.
1,100m	Races at 1,100m begin on the course proper and runners have a reasonable amount of distance before the first of two turns, which is on the inner track. Inside barriers do have some benefits here.
1,200m	Very similar to the 1,100m distance races, however, runners begin 100m further back on the straight. Runners turn onto the inner course and they have an additional 100m to get into a good position before that turn.
1,300m	Runners begin races at this distance in a chute just off the course proper. The field has the entire back straight before turning onto the inner course on the first of two turns. Inside barriers don’t have as much of an advantage.
1,400m	Races at 1,400m start at the same point on the track as the 1,100m races, except runners continue to the outer track, giving them more straight before the first of two wide turns.
1,500m	Similar to that of 1,400m races, except runners start 100m back on the straight and continue on to the outer track. Barriers don’t have as much of an influence as there’s plenty of straight to get into a good position.
1,600m	This is at the same position on the track as the 1,300m races, but for these races, runners go through the outer track. This gives the field even more time to sort themselves out on the straight.
1,800m	Runners begin this race just before the winning post and have a short amount of straight before the first turn. Therefore, barriers are more important here.
2,000m	Quite similar to that of the 1,800m distance races and runners don’t have a lot of time before the first turn of the race, so inside barriers do have more of an advantage here.

1,000m
