Saturday Racing Tips - Randwick Racecourse 09/03/24

Racing comes back to Randwick this Saturday as the Autumn Group 1 races season kicks on and we have heaps of listed racing at the course but most primarily the Group 1 Randwick Guineas and Canterbury Stakes are set to run for a share of $1 million and 750k prize money respectively. It’s going to be a very high level card and I am very excited for this card and have run through and picked out my best betting spots of the day so follow me below!

BEST BET - #1 - Private Eye (BEST BET) 
Has to be Private Eye here for Joe Pride after the way he challenged what looks like the best sprinter in the country right now in Imperatriz last time out in the Lightning Stakes. He, like a lot of others in this field, is looking towards the TJ Smith and I imagine all he will need here is a bit of luck from the gate but based on how he just blitzed to the front last time out I can’t see the gate stopping him here.

THE DANGER - #4 - Aft Cabin
Aft Cabin has always been a tricky horse for me to Catch but I think that based off of his trial work he should be prominent here. He didn’t do an awful lot in his Winter Prep but prior to then had promised and looked to be coming up in great order. Cummings has kept him away for a bit to get back on track and the most recent Rosehill trial was encouraging. I think he resumes well to racing here.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Mazu
My old friend Mazu races here and he is arguably the most intriguing runner in this race. Pride took this horse and as he usually does with a tried horse, looks to have him singing for the return to racing. He’s had two trials to lead him back in and in both he has been flying home just to stretch the legs a bit. He’s a class animal and I am very excited to see what Pride’s done with him, I assume the TJ Smith is the focus and taking this out all but cements his position there.

BEST BET - #1 - Think About It (NEXT BEST)
I am very excited to have Think About It kicking things off again here for Joe Pride. Our Everest champion has had two trials to lead him back into racing and he’s looked more than up to the task in both of them and looks to have plenty in the tank. No Imperatriz here as he’s down the Flemington straight and undefeated at this track / trip combination he’s the horse to beat and I don’t think they beat him.

THE DANGER - #6 - Espiona 
Market’s really backing Espiona so I took a closer look and fair enough she’s going to be competitive here. She resumed in the Lightning at Flemington when deep in the run and never being a winning threat but she let down with real purpose under Dee late and looked very strong. She gets Jmac aboard now, out to the 1300m and she looks to come into this the strongest she’s been.

VALUE BET  - #2 - Pericles 
I have never been fully sold on Pericles for the Godolphin camp but I think that he is starting to really come of age this prep and has now been placed runner up in two Group 1 races, one of which was last time out at Caulfield when second up and powering home behind Mr Brightside where the two of them put a bit of a space on the rest. Third up now, hard fit and looking to be in his career best I am keen to see how he steps out here.

BEST BET - #1 - Militarize
Militarize is one of the best colts in the country and kicked off the prep in style when flying home behind Fangirl in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes from very deep in the run. He now shapes up a lot fitter, he’s been targeted towards this race and I think all things considered he’s going to put on a show here.

THE DANGER - #3 - Celestial Legend
Celestial legend is a very honest danger here for the Bridge camp who I think can take the next big step in his career with a win here. He got a perfect steer by Kerrin in The Hobartville and proved too good for the field then, making a mess of them from out front. He looks like he’s going to relish getting out to the Randwick Mile, third up now, hard fit, only runs well for me.

VALUE BET - #4 - Encap (ROUGHIE OF THE DAY) 
Encap only has the one win from nine runs but just never seems to run poorly and is one of the most consistent three year old’s going around. He’s taken on all of the top colt this season and whilst he does get a tricky gate here he had the same problem last time out in The Hobartville and was able to overcome it to just miss when second to Celestial Legend. Third up now as well, hard fit, I would love to see him take this out.

Making a multi at Randwick is going to be pretty tricky on such a serious race day but I think that if we focus on those that are well weighted, those that are locally trained and those that are hard fit, primed for these races then we have a good chance of taking out this multi.
