It is the only 1,400m Group 1 race for 2YO on the calendar and therefore becomes a major target for many runners.

The Inglis Sires Produce Stakes form the second leg of the 2YO Triple Crown in Sydney. The first leg is the Golden Slipper and the final leg is the Champagne Stakes. On top of this, the race takes place during Day One of The Championships, which sees an obscene amount of prize money given away.

On Day One of The Championships, the other races include; the TJ Smith Stakes, the Australian Derby and the Doncaster Mile. There is also the Country Championships Final which takes place on the same day at Randwick Racecourse, but it isn’t technically a Group 1. I reckon there are a few live chances in this one, but Wodeton really does stand out in my eyes. The colt couldn’t get the job done in the Golden Slipper last time out, narrowly going down to Marhoona by just 0.2L. This time out, he comes into the race as the favourite, with odds of $2.80, thanks to PlayUp.

He wasn’t all that lucky in the Golden Slipper and had to wait for the right gap, so I think he can redeem himself here. James McDonald isn’t available to take the ride again, but he gets the services of Ryan Moore, which certainly isn’t a bad thing. The wide gate may just work in his favour as he can stay out of trouble and peel off in the closing stages.

Inglis Sires Produce Stakes Next Best - Vinrock

Siding with the Matt Laurie-trained colt here as my next best for the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes. You can pick up Vinrock going around with odds of $4.60 with PlayUp, which puts the colt on the third line of betting. He is two from two in his career so far and will be looking for the trifecta of wins to open up his career.

Last time out he won the VRC Sires after leading throughout and ended up winning by 2L. More of the same and he’ll give his one a massive shake. He has had a trial at Randwick since then and Mark Zahra has been with him for the colt’s entire career. Bring a slightly different form into this race, but looks like one of the top chances.

Inglis Sires Produce Stakes Best Roughie - State Visit

For my best roughie in the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes, I’m going with State Visit, who is currently going around with odds of $11, at PlayUp. Timing is everything in horse racing and I think trainer Ciaron Maher has timed the prep of this 2YO very well. The colt also looks well-suited at the 1,400m and the Randwick track should be to his liking as well.

Won first-up and then progressed to the Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes where he finished third. In his first career run, he recorded the fastest last 200m of the entire card at Canterbury. He draws well for this one and Jason Collett will take the saddle again, so there’s a lot to like, especially the price.

Look for runners that come into the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes in at least some sort of form. Since all the way back in 1990, only four winners have finished worse than fourth in their lead-up race. That’s some pretty damning stats!

Tulloch - 1957

Tulloch completely dominated during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s with wins in major races like the Cox Plate, the Caulfield Cup, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the Rosehill Guineas and the All Aged Stakes. His career record stands at 53:36-12-4, which included 15 wins from his last 24 races!

Luskin Star - 1977

Luskin Star’s biggest achievement was probably winning the Australian 2YO Triple Crown, which includes winning the Golden Slipper, the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes and the Champagne Stakes. While he only competed in 17 races throughout his career, he ended up winning 13 of them and placed in an additional three more.

Octagonal - 1995

With almost $6 million worth of prize money in the bank, Octagonal was one of the best horses going around in the mid-to-late 1990’s. The stallion had a career record of 28:14-7-1, which included wins in the Cox Plate, the Australian Derby, the Rosehill Guineas as well as the Underwood Stakes.

Sebring - 2008

Sebring had a very short career, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t an epic one! He won five of the six races he competed in and came second in the sixth race. This record helped him amass over $2 million in prize money. The Gai Waterhouse-trained Sebring was named the Australian Champion Two-Year-Old in 2008 and also won the Golden Slipper that year.

Anamoe - 2021

More recently, we saw Anamoe win the 2021 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes. After winning a total of nine Group 1 races, Anamoe is now retired with a cool $11.7 million worth of prize money in the bank. Other than the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes, Anamoe won races like the Cox Plate, the Winx Stakes and the George Main Stakes.

The Inglis Sires Produce Stakes has a long and rich history, dating back all the way to 1867 when Glencoe was victorious. As previously mentioned, the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes takes place each year during The Championships, which is part of Sydney’s Autumn Racing Carnival, one of the biggest horse racing carnivals on the calendar.

First run as a Principal race, it took over 100 years for the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes to gain Group 1 status, which happened in 1980. In 1980, when the race was first run as a Group 1, it was won by Shaybisc.

Currently, the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes is run at a distance of 1,400m, but this hasn’t always been the case. The race has also been run at distances of 1,200m as well as 1,600m, however, it has remained at the distance of 1,400m since 1973. The race has also held several different names but has been known as the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes since 2014.
