Rosehill Guineas Best Bet - Broadsiding

Sticking with the fav here, but I don’t think this will be as straightforward as James Cummings and James McDonald may expect. The Group 1 winner is all class and is the current $1.95 favourite with PlayUp. It’s getting borderline too skinny for me, so if you want more value, I’ve got a couple of other tips for you.

The colt comes into this one third up after winning the Hobartville Stakes to open his campaign and then finishing second last time out in the Randwick Guineas. He has only had one attempt past the mile, which was in the Cox Plate where he stormed home to finish third. The rise in trip looks good and looks the horse to beat.

Rosehill Guineas Next Best - Goldrush Guru

Goldrush Guru really does look the goods and might be the value play of the day if you want to avoid Broadsiding. The colt is currently on the third line of betting with PlayUp, going around with odds of $5.50 to take the win. Unlike others in this one, he will be tackling the race fourth up, so he has that extra level of fitness. 

He is the kind of runner that improves with each run and we have seen this on paper so far this prep. He has gone from ninth to fourth to third, which was in the Australian Guineas last time out. The colt has a reasonable amount of success at the distance as well. Jamie Melham has been with the colt for his latest two runs and takes the saddle again.

Rosehill Guineas Best Roughie - Checkmate

The Rosehill Guineas might turn into a little bit of a chess match, with runners jostling for position and biding their time. So, what better runner to slot in as my best roughie than Checkmate! The gelding is another that has been building nicely so far this prep and he comes into this one with odds of $18 to take the win with PlayUp.

He makes the trip from New Zealand where he has impressed. He is bred for this distance and it seems as though this prep has been planned to a tee by Lance O'Sullivan and Andrew Scott. A runner with plenty of upside and it seems like the market has forgotten about him because they can’t line up the form. Worth a crack.

For the 2025 Rosehill Guineas, we see a field of 11 runners line up, which is down from the 12 runners we saw in the 2024 race. We also haven’t seen any emergencies listed either, so if there are any pre-race scratchings, the size field will be reduced. At the time of writing, we haven’t seen any scratchings.

The winner of the Rosehill Guineas will usually come from one of those Sydney races.

Looking out of state now, the Australian Guineas, which is run at Flemington Racecourse is a solid lead-up race to check out. In previous years, the Australian Guineas and the Randwick Guineas were run on the same day, so it meant that connections had to make a choice, which is why you’ll see a split of runners coming from either of those races before the Rosehill Guineas.

We spoke about just how important the barrier draw was for the success of a runner and now we have the stats to back it up! Since 2003, only four Rosehill Guineas winners have jumped from a barrier wider than eight.

Fillies also seem to struggle in the Rosehill Guineas, so it could be the best option to avoid them. In fact, we haven’t seen a filly win the Rosehill Guineas since 1989. It is important to note though, that fillies don’t usually target this race anyway, so there may not be many fillies in the field each year.

The favourite and shorter-priced runners have had a lot of success in the Rosehill Guineas, especially in recent times. There hasn’t been a winner who jumped with double-digit odds since Criterion back in 2014. So, it certainly pays to look into the more favoured runners in the market.

Phar Lap is well known as the horse that won the Melbourne Cup, but he has also won several other key Group 1 races. Phar Lap has a Group 2 race named after him, the Phar Lap Stakes and there is even a movie made about him! He finished with a career record of 51:37-3-2.

Ajax - 1937

Ajax won the Rosehill Guineas in 1937 and famously won 18 races in a row! He won many Group 1 races throughout his career, which included; the Cox Plate, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the Caulfield Guineas and the Underwood Stakes, just to name a few.

Tulloch - 1957

Tulloch was one of the greatest Australian stayers and he was victorious in the 1957 Rosehill Guineas. The Tommy J. Smith-trained stallion had a career record of 53:36-12-4 and even has a current Group 2 race named after him, the Tulloch Stakes. Some of the key Group 1 races he won throughout his career included; the Victoria Derby, the Cox Plate and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Wenona Girl - 1960

One of the rare females to win the Rosehill Guineas, Wenona Girl was victorious in 1960. Wenona Girf won on 27 occasions and some of the Group 1 wins included; the All Aged Stakes, the Futurity Stakes, the CF Orr Stakes and the Flight Stakes. She was also inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.

Kingston Town - 1980

Famously known for winning three consecutive Cox Plates, Kingston Town also won the 1980 Rosehill Guineas. In the same year, Kingston Town was also crowned the Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year. There was a Group 1 race named after him, the Kingston Town Classic, however, that race is now called the Northerly Stakes.

The Autumn Sun - 2019

We take a big jump from 1980 to more recent times, with The Autumn Sun winning the Rosehill Guineas in 2019. While The Autumn Sun only ran in nine races, he certainly did capture the hearts of many Australians, thanks to his eight wins. In total, The Autumn Sun amassed over $3.5 million in prize money and won five Group 1s.

Anamoe - 2022

The nine-time Group 1 winner, Anamoe, is a recently retired colt who won the Rosehill Guineas in 2022. He had a career record of 25:14-5-3 and this translated into almost $12 million in prize money! He also won the Cox Plate in 2022 and was named the Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year as well as the Australian Champion Middle Distance Racehorse in the 2022/23 season.

The history of the Rosehill Guineas at Rosehill Racecourse is one of prestige, boasting such victors as Phar Lap, Anamoe, Tulloch and Ajax, some of Australia’s greatest racing champions of all time. In this portion of this Rosehill Guineas preview, we will take a look at the changes over time that have occurred to this great race.

First held in 1910 and won by Electric Wire, we have seen over 100 iterations of the Rosehill Guineas at Rosehill Racecourse since this historic day. The Rosehill Guineas takes place during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, which is one of the biggest horse racing carnivals on the calendar.

For the first five years of the Rosehill Guineas, the race was run at seven furlongs in length, the equivalent of 1,400m. This was changed in 1915 to one and ⅛ mile, or 1,800m where it stood for over 30 years. As was customary at the time for 2,000m races, when the Rosehill Guineas moved to that distance in 1948, it was called one and ¼ mile. From 1973 up until today, the Rosehill Guineas has been raced at a distance of 2,000m.

Similarly, to the change in distances for the Rosehill Guineas, the grade for the Rosehill Guineas was changed to Group 1 from a Principal Race in 1980, as was happening at the time across Australian racing. Since then, the Rosehill Guineas has been one of the key races on the calendar.

• The fastest record finish time in Rosehill Guineas history is shared between Danewin in 1995 and Octagonal in 1996 with a time of 1:59.99 seconds. 
• Spectacularly, this time for the Rosehill Guineas was achieved by those two runners in consecutive years at Rosehill Racecourse.
• The year 1978 was the only occasion that did not hold the Rosehill Guineas due to a scheduling change in the New South Wales racing calendar from Spring to Autumn.

In 2024, we saw the pre-race favourite Riff Rocket salute for all those favourite backers out there. The 3YO gelding finished in third place in the Australian Guineas, which was his lead-up race. Ceolwulf finished in second place, just 0.8L off the pace.

Rounding out the minor placings was Cap Ferrat, who finished 1.1L behind the leader. In the end, there was a total of 14.3L that separated the first and last runners. Along with this, the 2024 Rosehill Guineas was run in a time of 2:03.03.
