About the Tancred Stakes

One of the most important Group One races on the calendar, the Tancred Stakes takes place in 2026 on March 28. It is a weight-for-age staying race that produces some of the best horses Australia has to offer.

Slated at 2,400m, it is a true staying test and many believe it is ranked only behind the Golden Slipper in prestige throughout the races run at Rosehill Racecourse during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Rosehill Racecourse is also home to the Vinery Stud Stakes, run on the same day. If that’s not enough, Melbourne also has a Group 1 run on the same day, the Australian Cup, at Flemington Racecourse.

The Tancred Stakes itself was named after Henry Eugene Tancred, who was a former chairman of the Sydney Turf Club. The winner of the Tancred Stakes is exempt from the ballot for some of the other key races throughout Autumn, including the Queen Elizabeth Stakes as well as the Sydney Cup.

Back in 2022, the race didn’t take place at Rosehill Racecourse due to poor weather. Instead, the race was postponed by two days and held at Newcastle Racecourse. Even though Newcastle Racecourse doesn’t see many major races, it is still one of the top tracks in the country.

We have all the information you need about the Tancred Stakes here at OnlyRacing. We’ve got tips, odds, field, results and more information than you can poke a stick at! So, make sure you check back with us on race week, as we will have all the up-to-date information you need.

Tancred Stakes Tips

It’s Tancred Stakes tips time! We’ve gone through all the nitty-gritty details and produced some of the best free horse racing tips going around. Our horse racing experts love providing their tips to our loyal readers and they can’t wait to show you who they’ve picked for the Tancred Stakes. We also have Rosehill tips for the majority of races that take place at the same track as the Tancred Stakes.

Our Tancred Stakes tips aren’t available for the race in 2026 just yet. We are waiting until it is race week, so we have a clear picture of each runner that is expected to take part in the race. Once we have this information, we will provide our best bet, next best and best roughie for the 2026 Tancred Stakes.

Seeing that you’re already here, let’s check out which runners our experts have on top for the 2025 Tancred Stakes:

Tancred Stakes Best Bet - Dubai Honour

International form isn’t always the easiest to line up, but the market has its eye on two options Dubai Honour and Vauban, who are both around the $3.00 to $4.00 mark, with a couple of other runners in single-digits as well. This looks to be one of the classic Tancred Stakes races and I’m going to go with Dubai Honour, the $3.10 favourite.

The 7YO jet-setter makes his way to Australia after racing in Hong Kong and England. He looks to have some of the best form coming into this one and he has the great William Haggas as his trainer. Haggas does some of his best work at Sydney tracks and the gelding is unbeaten across two attempts in Sydney as well, both over 2,000m. The one to beat.

Tancred Stakes Next Best - Vauban

It was nip and tuck, but Vauban has to settle as my next best for the 2025 Tancred Stakes. The gelding kicked off this prep in the best way possible, getting the win at Rosehill in the Sky High Stakes two weeks ago. Vauban is on the second line of betting at the moment, with odds of $3.90 thanks to PlayUp.

I’m interested to see the progression of the 7YO and he’ll be all the fitter for that first-up run when the market didn’t give him much of a chance (he was paying $9.00 at the jump). The rise in distance looks to be in his favour as well. Draws pretty well (barrier three) and jockey Tim Clark, who was on board for the Sky High Stakes victory, takes the saddle again.

Tancred Stakes Best Roughie - Circle Of Fire

There looks to be plenty of quality roughies in this race, but I do like the look of Circle Of Fire, who is currently paying $34 for the win with PlayUp. The stallion is another that is coming through the Sky High Stakes and he finished fourth in that one, 3.3L off Vauban, after jumping with odds of $26.

The 5YO was quite dominant this time last year during the Autumn Racing Carnival, winning races like the Chairman's Quality and the Sydney Cup. If he is anywhere near that sort of form, he’ll be giving this one a real shout (and be one to watch as he goes deeper into this prep). Draws wide, but Jason Collett sticks with him and he’ll give Circle Of Fire a chance.

Tancred Stakes Betting

Even if you are new to the world of horse racing, Tancred Stakes betting isn’t too difficult, you just need a little guidance and you’ll be on your merry way! One of the things we do recommend here at OnlyRacing is to try your hand at a wide range of betting markets.

You’ll find that all the different betting apps will have a wide range of markets for you to bet on. In the beginning, you should stick with the simpler markets, like Win or Place Bets, but once you get your footing, you can try options that are a little more complex, like a Trifecta or Quaddie!

Once you’ve nailed down the market you’re going to bet on, one of the other things you need to do is choose which one of the many horse racing betting sites you are going to bet with. In Australia, you’ve got A LOT of choices and you don’t just have to stick with one either! Actually, we recommend having multiple accounts with different Australian betting sites.

Having multiple accounts means you can easily shop around for better odds or even find new betting sites bonuses to take advantage of. When it comes to the Tancred Stakes, there are a few bookies that we think you’ll like, if you’re having difficulty choosing one:

  1. PlayUp - We love PlayUp because of their unique offering when it comes to betting promotions.
  2. TopSport - We think TopSport is one of the best betting apps going around because of the tote price you get on Exotics.
  3. BetRight - We think BetRight is the bees-knees because of their fast withdrawals and awesome dividends that are on offer.

The above bookies are just three of many that you can bet on come the upcoming Tancred Stakes Day. If three isn’t enough for you, all you need to do is scroll up to our “Betting Sites” section as we have so many more bookies to choose from.

Tancred Stakes Field

Everyone is keen to know who will take part in the 2026 Tancred Stakes but as it isn’t race week, we don’t yet know which runners are expected to take part. However, if history is anything to go by, we should see a stacked field of both domestic and international runners, who will all fight it out for the lion’s share of the prize money that’s on offer.

On top of this, if the odds are available for the race, we will list them in our “Odds” section. Checking out the odds will give you an idea of which runners are favoured in the market. Although, it is important to note that the odds will be constantly changing. So, if you check the odds a couple of days later, you’ll likely see movement.

While we wait for the 2026 Tancred Stakes field to be confirmed, let’s take a look at the quality field that took part in 2025 here:

For the 2025 edition of the Tancred Stakes, we saw a field of 14 runners confirmed, which is a jump from the 11 runners confirmed in the 2024 race. In the end, we saw three pre-race scratchings, with Waltham, Kinesiology and La Crique not taking part in the race, which meant the field size was reduced to 11.

Scratchings are super annoying, especially if you placed a bet on a runner that ends up being scratched. Unfortunately, scratchings are a way of life in horse racing and they are a fairly common occurrence, even in races like the Tancred Stakes where there is $1.5 million up for grabs! Scratchings can take place at any time, so you should keep a close eye on things if you’ve bet on the race.

Something else to keep an eye on is the barrier draw. The barrier each runner jumps from can have a major impact on race tactics and the overall outcome of the race. Some barriers have seen more success than others in the Tancred Stakes, so that’s something else you need to look into.

Tancred Stakes Form Guide

While it may not be the most riveting thing to go through pages upon pages of form to try and lock down a winner, we like to make things easier for you at OnlyRacing. We are happy to say that we do all the heavy lifting, finding the key form indicators that expose patterns in the type of horse that wins the Trancred Stakes.

Armed with this knowledge, you can hopefully make more accurate choices on who to bet on. The stats never lie, so if you want to make a decision with your head and not your heart, we’ve got some key form guide information that you need to know about. Let’s get cracking with the Tancred Stakes form guide, shall we!

In the past, we’ve seen several runners come from the Ranvet Stakes as their lead-up run, with 11 Tancred Stakes winners between 1998 and 2014 coming through that Group 1. However, in more recent years, we’ve seen a decline in runners coming through the Ranvet Stakes, as the race is now just one week before the Tancred Stakes.

The most successful age to look at for Tancred Stakes winners would be 4YOs and 5YOs. These winners have seen success on 16 occasions since 2000. It could be worth checking out any runners making their move from across the ditch as well. New Zealand runners have seen some success in the past.

When it comes to the odds of the winner, it has been a little bit of a mixed bag. In the last 25 years, 10 favourites have won the race. However, roughies have also had their fair share of wins as well. In the last 25 years, we have seen 10 winners that have jumped with odds of $13+. Including in 2024, when Kalapour won the race at a starting price of $31.

Tancred Stakes Horses

Some of the best-ever staying horses compete and win the Tancred Stakes. With a race that has so much history, there are many Tancred Stakes horses that we would like to include in this section, but we only have a limited amount of space. This means we’ve had to swing the axe and focus on only the best of the best horses (in our humble opinion).

Did the horse you think make the cut? All will be revealed below! We focus on the life and success of a handful of the top Tancred Stakes horses to ever win the race. Check out all the juicy details here:

Apollo Eleven - 1973

Apollo Eleven won the 1973 Tancred Stakes and a few other Group 1 races throughout his career. He won the Verry Elleegant Stakes in 1973 and 1975. After his 1975 Chipping Norton Stakes, he was travelling to compete in the Sydney Cup (another race he won in 1973), but it is suspected that he was poisoned by a crime syndicate.

Kingston Town - 1980

The 1980 Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year won several races throughout his career, including the 1980 Tancred Stakes. He had a stellar career record of 41:30-5-2, which helped him amass well over $1 million, which was certainly a lot in the 1980s! He is most famously known for winning the Cox Plate three consecutive times.

Octagonal - 1996 & 1997

Octagonal is a multiple winner of the Tancred Stakes, winning the race in back-to-back years in 1996 and 1997. With almost $6 million in prize money, Octagonal also won other key Group 1s like the Cox Plate, the Rosehill Guineas and the Underwood Stakes, just to name a few. He was also the 1996 Australian Horse of the Year.

Makybe Diva - 2005

Famously known as the only horse to win the Melbourne Cup three times, Makybe Diva holds a special place in many Australians’ hearts. The Makybe Diva Stakes is a Group 1 run during the Spring Racing Carnival, which is obviously named after the great mare. With over $14 million in prize money, she also won races like the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Cox Plate.

Hartnell - 2015

Harnell probably would have won a lot more races and accumulated much more prize money if he wasn’t around at the same time as Winx! Nevertheless, he still gained over $7 million in prize money throughout his career and had a record of 58:13-14-9. Some of the Group 1 races he did win included; the Turnbull Stakes, the  CF Orr Stakes and the Epsom Handicap.

Verry Elleegant - 2020

Verry Elleegant achieved just about as much as you can in horse racing, she had a career record of 36:16-7-3 and won almost $15 million in prize money. She won the greatest race of them all, the Melbourne Cup and now even has a Group 1 race named after her, the Verry Elleegant Stakes.

Tancred Stakes Odds

Checking out the Tancred Stakes odds before you place any bets is something you should do every time. Shopping around is also a good idea because you don’t want to leave any potential winnings on the table. All the top horse racing betting apps will open markets for you to bet on before the race.

There are a range of horse racing markets that you can bet on, so you can choose whatever tickles your fancy. We think it is a good idea to place your bets on the Tancred Stakes as soon as possible, as you could find more value compared to if you bet on the day of the race.

Betting when the race is listed as “Before Noms” is recommended because of the value you’ll likely find. As well as this, you’ll get your stake back in your back pocket if your chosen runner doesn’t end up making the final field.

Many factors influence the odds of a particular runner, so keep a close eye on the odds as they could be fluctuating and you don’t want to miss out on a good price for your chosen runner! In terms of the 2026 Tancred Stakes odds, our top bookie, PlayUp, is yet to release their odds.

Tancred Stakes History

As previously mentioned, the Tancred Stakes is named after Henry Eugene Tancred who was a former chairman of the Sydney Turf Club. However, the race didn’t always go by this name. In fact, there have been several name changes over the years:

  • 1963-1976 - H E Tancred Cup
  • 1977-1980 - H E Tancred Stakes
  • 1981-1989 - Tancred Stakes
  • 1990 - The BMW International Stakes
  • 1991-1995 - The BMW Stakes
  • 1996-2001 - Mercedes Classic
  • 2002-2017 - The BMW
  • 2018-Present - Tancred Stakes

The Tancred Stakes was first run as a 2,400m race back in 1963 and won by Maidenhead. Unlike many other Group 1 races, the distance of the race has remained pretty much the same throughout the years. The only year that saw a different race distance was 1964 when the race was run over a distance of 2,000m.

The race was run under Principal status between 1963 and 1979, after that it was upgraded to Group 1 status, where it has remained. The Tancred Stakes takes place each year during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, which is one of the biggest horse racing carnivals on the calendar.

In 2025, the Tancred Stakes was originally supposed to be run on Saturday, March 29, but due to poor weather, the race was moved to the following Tuesday. This was also the case for the other Group 1 at Rosehill that was supposed to be run on the same day, the Vinery Stud Stakes.

As you probably already know, the Tancred Stakes is just one of many races on the Australian calendar. The good news for you is that we go into detail on every Group 1 and key race that takes place each year. All you need to do is check out our Group One races list for all the details you need.

Tancred Stakes Results

So, who won the 2026 Tancred Stakes? All the Tancred Stakes results will be revealed here as soon as the race has been run and won, so we will have to wait a little longer to see who is victorious. We will have the full finishing position of the entire field as well as a race replay for you to feast your eyes on.

For the Tancred Stakes in 2025, we saw Dubai Honour claim victory. The William Haggas-trained gelding was on the second line of betting and finished 0.9L ahead of Duke De Sessa, who was also one of the more favoured runners and jumped from barrier one.

Coming in third was the pre-race favourite, Vauban, who finished 1.4L off the pace after jumping from barrier two. In the end, the 2025 Tancred Stakes was run in a time of 2:31.20 and there was a total of 18L that split the first and last runners across the finishing line.

We do the heavy lifting for you, going through all the key details of each top bookie in Australia. Once you have all that information, you’ll find making a decision so much easier.

Once again, our bookie reviews page can help you here. There are plenty of markets to choose from with each bookie and they all have a slightly different betting process when it comes to getting your bets on. All these details and more are covered in our bookie reviews.

The Tancred Stakes takes place each year at Rosehill Racecourse in Sydney.

In 2025, we saw Dubai Honour win the Tancred Stakes. The narrow pre-race favourite, Vauban, finished third in the race, 1.4L off the pace.

The Tancred Stakes is one of the most prestigious races on the Australian calendar, and therefore you can expect a lot of prize money to be up for grabs. In fact, there is a total of $1.5 million in prize money that is shared between the top finishers in the race.
