Golden Slipper Preview and Tips 22/03/25

Golden Slipper Day comes to Rosehill Racecourse as we see a whole stack of Group One races, five at Rosehill and another at Moonee Valley. Other than the Golden Slipper, we have the William Reid Stakes, the George Ryder Stakes, the Rosehill Guineas, the Ranvet Stakes and The Galaxy. What a ripper of a day!

For the Golden Slipper, we see a field of 16, plus two emergencies confirmed. It’s a fairly open field as we usually see for one of the biggest races in the Autumn Racing Carnival, with Tempted the current narrow $5.00 favourite from Wodeton, paying $5.50 with PlayUp. All eyes will be on the 1,200m dash on Saturday.

My Saturday tips have landed at OnlyRacing for the Golden Slipper and I also have tips for the other five Group One races, so you’ve got some reading to do! I’ve done the heavy lifting, going through the entire field to put together my five best bets for the Golden Slipper, so there is something for everyone.

We’ve got a need, a need for speed! The 2025 Golden Slipper looks to be run at a fast tempo with so many runners boasting decent barrier speed. The likes of North England, Devil Night, Military Tycoon, Bellazaine, Beiwacht and Farcited all have barrier speed and it’s North England that holds the barrier closest to the inside, at nine!

The current narrow pre-race favourite, Tempted, draws barrier one and he’ll likely hold a decent position, probably settling in around the midfield. Wodeton draws barrier two and will probably settle around the same spot as Tempted. This gives us the potential of a shootout between the pair if they both get the right breaks at the right time.

Another edition of the Golden Slipper, another wide-open field! At the time of writing, PlayUp has Tempted and Wodeton among the favourites, but I’m going to look past them and others. I think Rivellino looks in fine form. I’ll be taking him for the win, but go each-way if you like, to play it a little safer.

You can pick up Rivellino for $10 with PlayUp to claim victory, at the time of writing. The colt comes into this one unbeaten in three attempts. Last time out, he won the Skyline Stakes where he beat home Skyhook, who also lines up here after a very convincing win in the Pago Pago Stakes. Huge Bowman saddles up and he has a lot of options from barrier three.

Wodeton is a pretty safe bet in my opinion and is currently on the second line of betting with Bet365, going around with odds of $5.50. He would have probably been the heavy favourite if he had got the chocolates like he was expected to last time out. He jumped as the $2.00 favourite in the Todman Stakes and ended up in second place, 0.8L off the pace.

Trainer Chris Waller certainly knows his way around a 2YO and I expect he’ll have Wodeton ready to go for his Grand Final. He gets the winkers on for the first time and the great James McDonald steps up in the saddle. There is a lot to like about the 2YO and it’s easy to see why he is one of the more favoured runners.

At double-digit odds, I think Marhoona presents decent enough value. The filly is currently going around with odds of $10 at Dabble, putting her on the fourth line of betting. She is one of just a couple of fillies that are tackling the Group One and therefore she will carry 2kg less than her male counterparts.

Draws barrier six, which will suit her quite nicely and books the services of Damian Lane for the first time. We last saw Marhoona put in a solid performance in the Reisling Stakes, one of the ideal lead-up races. That day, she was beaten only by Tempted, who is the current favourite, by only 0.3L.

Tempted has to be considered the main danger in this one and I can easily see the favourite winning this one. Fillies always tend to do well in the Golden Slipper and she is a last-start winner in the Group Two Reisling Stakes. The 2YO is the current pre-race favourite with QuestBet, going around with odds of $5.00 for the win.

In her run before the Reisling Stakes, she had her first attempt at Group One level in the Blue Diamond Stakes. In that race, she didn’t have a lot of luck and got stuck in traffic at the top of the straight. She was charging home late, but it was all to no avail. If she gets clear air in this one, watch out, she’ll be motoring home.

I know I say it a lot, but I’m going to say it again. I’m having a throw at the stumps with Military Tycoon. I can see why he is currently going around with odds of $26 with Bet Right, but there is just something about him that makes me think he’s good enough to finish top four, so he’s one to include in the wider exotics, or for a place bet if you’re feeling lucky.

Another tip, another filly and Military Tycoon comes into this one after winning the Ottawa Stakes in Flemington a couple of weeks ago. She’ll be going from 1,000m to 1,200m here, so that is a little bit of a query, but the filly is on fire and will certainly give this her best shot. This will be a difficult task, but Ciaron Maher did have other options and he chose this.
