Ranvet Stakes Preview and Tips 22/03/25

Get ready for one of the biggest days on the racing calendar - Golden Slipper Day! We are treated to a mammoth five Group One races at Rosehill Racecourse including the Ranvet Stakes, the Golden Slipper, the George Ryder Stakes, the Rosehill Guineas and The Galaxy. On top of this, we also have the William Reid Stakes, which is at Moonee Valley.

In the 2025 Ranvet Stakes we see a small field of just seven runners expected to line up in the starting barriers. Out of the seven runners, the market only has eyes for one and that is the great Via Sistina. Via Sistina is the heavy favourite, at virtually unbackable fixed win price of $1.35.

My Saturday tips have arrived for all you loyal OnlyRacing fans! I’ve got tips for all six Group One races on Saturday so there is plenty to keep you occupied. For the Ranvet Stakes specifically, I’ve had a look at all seven runners and have put forward some best bets. There’s a lot to get through, so let’s get cracking!

There’s only seven runners in this one, so everyone should have their opportunity if they are good enough. I expect the race tempo to be fairly decent as we have a couple of runners who will likely look to take the front. The likes of Zarakem, Full Count Felicia and Al Mubhir all have speed to burn early on.

All eyes will be on the heavy favourite, Via Sistina, who jumps from barrier two. This gives the great mare a lot of options, especially if Zarakem, who jumps from barrier one, looks to speed away in the early stages. In terms of closing speed, Fawkner Park has to be respected, while Via Sistina, of course, be motoring home.

No prizes for guessing who I think the best runner in the race is. Via Sistina is too skinny to back at odds of $1.35 that is currently on offer with PlayUp, but she is one you can include as the anchor in your exotics if that’s how you like to play. Via Sistina was my best bet for the 2024 Ranvet Stakes and she’s looking to win back-to-back editions of the race this year.

Something would have to go seriously wrong for her not to win this. She draws perfectly, JMac is back in the saddle and she proved too good in the Verry Elleegant Stakes last time out, beating up a few of them that line up again here. The small field works for her as well, making it easy for her to navigate through traffic in the closing stages.

With everyone else fighting for second, I think Fawkner Park is a good option. He has got among the best closing speed and the small field works to his advantage as he probably won’t be held up when it’s time to let down. He is another that comes through the Verry Elleegant Stakes and in that race he finished fourth.

In that one, he produced the fastest last 200m of the race, so the step up from 1,600m to 2,000m might work pretty well. He enjoys this distance as well, with five wins from eight attempts. If you’re considering Fawkner Park, you can pick up the gelding for odds of $12 at Bet365.

Lindermann comes into this on the quick one-week turnaround after finishing third in the Sky High Stakes last Saturday. He will be tackling the Ranvet Stakes fourth up after runs in the Apollo Stakes, where he finished second, the Verry Elleegant Stakes, where he finished third and the Sky High Stakes, as I already mentioned.

Jockey Nash Rawiller had been with him for all those runs, but this time out he gets the services of Damian Lane, with Rawiller riding Full Count Felicia instead. The WFA conditions seem to suit him quite well and he is another that enjoys the 2,000m. At the time of writing, Dabble is offering Lindermann at $10 to take the win.

If you don’t like the look of any of the runners I have put forward so far, then check out Al Mubhir. UK raider Al Mubhir has a lot of class and I do rate him highly, one of my biggest queries is his fitness. The 6YO is currently on the second line of betting and you can pick him up with odds of $8.25 at QuestBet.

This will be his first run on Australian soil and we haven’t seen the gelding race since October. If he is fit enough when tackling this one first up, he could be a little surprise packet. His most notable run to date was probably the Group Three third place at Longchamp. I don’t think he’ll win, but he’ll offer up something a little different than Via Sistina is used to. 

Tipping in a race with just seven runners isn’t necessarily the easiest thing to do, especially because place bets will only get paid to the first two across the finishing line. I think I’ve found something special in Golden Path though and if you want to include him in wider exotics or even a small place bet if you’re feeling lucky.

At the time of writing, Golden Path is paying $34 for the win, or $8.50 for the place, with Bet Right. He’s another that has come through the Verry Elleegant Stakes and he finished near the rear of the field but was just 2L off Via Sistina. Tends to run well across the 2,000m as well, so he’s worth something small in my eyes.
