Rosehill Guineas Preview and Tips 22/03/25

Golden Slipper Day comes to Rosehill Racecourse and that means we are treated to a whole heap of Group One races. At Rosehill, we have the Rosehill Guineas, the Golden Slipper, the George Ryder Stakes, the Ranvet Stakes and The Galaxy. Don’t forget, there is also the William Reid Stakes, which is run in Melbourne.

For the Rosehill Guineas on Saturday, we see a field of 11 confirmed. There is one clear favourite, with Broadsiding getting a lot of the attention. Other runners like Swiftfalcon, Goldrush Guru and Aeliana are all fancied in the race as well and should certainly be considered.

It’s a massive day of racing, but I have you completely covered at OnlyRacing with all my Saturday tips across all six Group One races. I’ve gone through all 11 runners for the Rosehill Guineas and put together my five best bets. There’s a lot to get through, so let’s not waste any more time and get stuck in!

Race Tempo and Likely Leaders

There seems to be some moderate speed in this one. The likes of Checkmate (barrier three), Majorca Sunset (barrier six) and Goldrush Guru (barrier seven) all have some barrier speed. I think that one of those three will look to lead this one. Goldrush Guru might be the one to fight for it and claim the lead.

The pre-race favourite, Broadsiding, will probably settle near the rear of the field and jumping from barrier nine, he shouldn’t have any trouble getting into a nice position with some cover. It’s a relatively small field as well, so he should have any trouble finding some breaks in the traffic when it’s time to lay it down.

Rosehill Guineas Best Bet - Broadsiding

Broadsiding is clearly the best horse in the race and I think he’ll get the win here. Probably getting on the verge of being too skinny for me, but at around even money, I think that’s okay. Right now, you can pick up Broadsiding with odds of $1.95 at PlayUp. While I do think he has the best chance of winning, there are still some quality runners he’ll be up against.

It might not be the walk in the park that the odds suggest, but if anyone is up for the challenge, it’s James McDonald. The 3YO has had a great prep so far, coming into the Rosehill Guineas third-up after winning the Hobartville Stakes and a half-a-length second to Linebacker in the Randwick Guineas. The rise in trip seems to suit as well.

PlayUp
Broadsiding to win @ $1.95.

Rosehill Guineas Safe Bet - Goldrush Guru

Goldrush Guru is good enough to win this one I think and at $5.50 with Bet365, at the time of writing, he looks a great bet. The colt hasn’t seen the winner’s stall so far this prep, but he has been improving with each run and last time out he finished third in the Australian Guineas behind Feroce and Savaglee.

The Rosehill Guineas will be his fourth run in this prep and that extra run under his belt could come in handy fitness-wise. He has had success over 2,000m and greater, with the main race being the Victoria Derby, which he won last Spring. Jockey Jamie Melham saddles up and she’s been with the colt for his last two runs (plus his win in the Victory Derby!).

Rosehill Guineas Value Bet - Aeliana

The sole female in the Rosehill Guineas, Aeliana will carry 2kg less than the rest of the field. She comes into this one on the fourth line of betting with Dabble and you can pick her up for odds of $7.50. The 3YO seems to be another that will enjoy the rise in trip and she should be peaking here third-up.

Follows a similar prep as some of the others in this one, kicking things off in the Hobartville Stakes, where she finished third, then headed to the Randwick Guineas, where she finished fourth. Has some options from barrier one and Jason Collett, who has been with her for the last two runs, sticks. Should be competitive, so don’t overlook.

Rosehill Guineas The Danger - Swiftfalcon

I think that Swiftfalcon is one of the biggest dangers to Broadsiding in the Rosehill Guineas on Saturday. The gelding is another that follows the Hobartville Stakes into the Randwick Guineas pattern and will be tackling the Rosehill Guineas third-up. He finished second in the Hobartville Stakes and then third in the Randwick Guineas.

With QuestBet, Swiftfalcon is on the second line of betting, currently going around with odds of $5.00 for the win. I think he was feeling it late in the Randwick Guineas, so the jump up to 2,000m is a little bit of a query for me. However, if he gets a softer tempo on Saturday, it will be to his advantage and I think he’ll get it here.

Swiftfalcon (each-way) @ $5.00/$1.58.

Rosehill Guineas Best Roughie - Checkmate

I think people aren’t sure what to make of Checkmate, who will have his first run in Australia after coming across the ditch. When people aren’t sure, it usually makes for some fairly decent odds and at the moment you can get $17 for Checkmate to win the Rosehill Guineas at Bet Right.

In New Zealand, he has impressed so far this prep, but like many, I’m not sure how that form will stack up against the Aussie runners. He is bred for this distance though, so the step up in trip looks ideal. There is a lot of upside to Checkmate and trainers Lance O'Sullivan and Andrew Scott seemed to have planned this well. He’s worth a try in my eyes.
